Why we work on water & Sanitization programmes
Water determines the health of a community before any clinic is involved. Households drawing from unsafe sources carry preventable illness continually, and the burden falls first on children and on the elderly.
The Ministry took up water and sanitation as part of its health care mandate, on the understanding that the source must be addressed alongside the sickness.
Who the programme serves
Wells serve whole communities rather than selected households, which places this among the widest reaching of our programmes.
Each project begins with the community and with the local leaders who know where need and access meet. Drilling and refurbishment are carried out to a standard that will hold, and sanitation training follows so that the community can maintain what has been provided.
Projects of this kind are made possible by partners who fund them, and those partners receive reporting on the source their giving delivered.
What we provide to the Water & Sanitization programme
Drilling of wells
The Ministry drills wells so that communities have access to safe water near to where they live.
Refurbishment of existing wells
Wells that have fallen out of use are restored, returning a source that a community already knows and can reach.
Sanitation services
Sanitation provision accompanies water access, so that a clean source is not undone by conditions around it.
Sanitation training
Households receive training in hygiene and sanitation practice, which sustains the benefit of a clean source over years.
