This is the story of Kagoya Irene, a 39-year-old mother of four, living in the heart of Mayuge, a community where survival is a daily battle. In this village, many families survive on less than a dollar a day, with some only able to afford one or two meals daily. It is a place where dreams are often deferred due to the harsh reality of poverty, but Irene has hope—hope that one day she will break free from the cycle of struggle.
Irene and her partner make a living as farmers, tilling the land in hopes of a better tomorrow. However, their earnings are meager, with the couple making only about $28 per farming season. With this little income, they have managed to send only three of their children to school, while their firstborn, a young man who dreams of becoming an electrician, has been out of school for two years. The weight of this unfulfilled dream presses heavily on Irene’s heart.
Every day, Irene feels the pang of helplessness as she watches her children struggle. She wants nothing more than to give them the life they deserve, a life where they don’t have to worry about whether they will eat or whether they will have the opportunity to learn. But despite the challenges, Irene refuses to give up.
“I have always dreamed of learning tailoring,” Irene says, her voice soft but filled with determination.
“If I can learn to sew, I will be able to help my children in ways I can’t now. I want to provide them with the basics they need—the clothes, the food, and most importantly, the education they deserve. I want to pay off their school fees debts and see them succeed. I want to be there for their end-of-term report cards, to see them graduate, to see their dreams come true.”
